Math metaphor:

Mathematics is just something people do, like mountain climbing. Exposition is trail maintenance. So far I have been guided to some pretty sights, and have heard of some astounding vistas. To get a PhD one is required to cut a new path. With a nailclipper for a hatchet, I'm on my way.

I always described the difference between a grad student and a professor trying to solve a problem like this: They are in the forest. The grad student is (obviously) very short and has to crawl through all the spiky bushes not ever being able to see where they are actually going. But the professor is taller and can thus see further and leap over all the bushes and stones and fallen trees.

Maybe the professor also has a machete?

well, a machete is more helpful than a steak knife .. though nail clippers do come in handy, when your fingernails grow too long.
